Association between polymorphism of the G-protein β3 subunit C825T and essential hypertension: an updated meta-analysis involving 36,802 subjects Biol. Res.
Zheng,Huan; Xu,Huifeng; Cui,Bin; Xie,Nanzi; Wang,Zhi; Luo,Ming.
Purpose: The G-protein β3-subunit gene C825T polymorphism (GNB3-C825T) has been reported to be associated with essential hypertension (EH), but results from previous studies are conflicting. The present study aimed at investigating the association between this polymorphism and risk of EH using a meta-analysis on the published studies. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Embase, CBM (China Biological Medicine Database), Wanfang and VIP databases were searched to identify eligible studies published in English and Chinese before March 2013. Data were extracted using standardized methods. The association was assessed by the odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Begg's test was used to measure publication bias. Results: A total of 40...

Does Experience Determine Performance? A Meta-Analysis on the Experience-Performance Relationship AgEcon
Peake, Whitney O.; Marshall, Maria I..
The impact of experience on entrepreneurial performance has been widely tested. Although experience is expected to positively impact performance, results are varied. This research synthesizes the current literature by determining systematic sources of variation through both exploratory and ordered probit analyses. Results reveal that start date for data collection and form of experience tested pose a major impact on the probability of obtaining a positive estimate for the experience-performance relationship. This research further emphasizes the need for tightened standards across the experience-performance literature in order to equip both academics and practitioners with better information.

How to Evaluate and Interpret a Scientific Article About Therapy Or Therapeutic Procedures? International Journal of Morphology
Otzen,Tamara; Manterola,Carlos; García-Domínguez,Maricela.
Regardless of the subject area and design used, it has been verified that between 40% and 60% of the studies published in biomedical journals are articles about therapy or therapeutic procedures (TP). Anyone writing a manuscript related to therapy or TP or reading an article of this type must demand at the very least a clear, precise and concise objective with respect to the research conducted, explicit mention of the design used with the respective inherent methodological details, and the mention and execution of statistical tools and the measures of association, or at least the numbers needed to calculate these values. The aim of this manuscript is to present a synthesis of the fundamental elements for the correct writing, reading and assessment of such...

Mapping of Forest Biodiversity Values: A Plural Perspective AgEcon
Nunes, Paulo A.L.D.; Ojea, Elena; Loureiro, Maria L..
The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is built on a conceptual framework that links biodiversity to the services ecosystems provide to society. Based on this framework, we first compile market and non-market forest valuation studies and, secondly, explore the potential of an econometric modeling exercise by conducting a world wide meta-analysis. This exercise aims to highlight the mapping of biodiversity indicators and assesses their respective role on the valuation exercise. Our results show that biodiversity loss is having an effect on forest ecosystem values. In addition, these effects reveal to be dependent on the type of services and global geo-climatic regions.

Scaling up Ecosystem Services Values: Methodology, Applicability and a Case Study AgEcon
Brander, Luke M.; Ghermandi, Andrea; Kuik, Onno; Markandya, Anil; Nunes, Paulo A.L.D.; Schaafsma, Marije; Wagtendonk, Alfred.
The approach of using existing data on economic values of local ecosystem services for an assessment of these values at a larger geographical scale can be called “scaling up”. In a scaling-up exercise, economic values from a particular study site are transferred to another geographical setting, for instance to the regional, national or global scale. This paper proposes a methodology for scaling up ecosystem service values to a European level, assesses the availability of data for conducting this method, and illustrates the procedure with a case study on wetland values. The proposed methodology makes use of meta-analysis to produce a value function that is subsequently applied to individual European wetland sites. Site-specific, study-specific and...

Systematic Review of Literature with Different Types of Designs International Journal of Morphology
Manterola,Carlos; Vial,Manuel; Pineda,Viviana; Sanhueza,Antonio.
In certain situations, which occur with particular frequency in the field of surgery and its related disciplines (where what predominates are observational-type studies), the management of randomized controlled clinical trials (RCT) is very difficult and as such, conducting a systematic review (SR) based on RCT and realice a meta-analysis is even more difficult. Therefore, we have generated a methodology for implementing a SR with different types of designs (including observational studies) as an alternative in order to clarify the uncertainty in the field of therapy when there are few RCT and the evidence relies so heavily on descriptive and observational studies. The aim of this study, was to set out a methodology that leads to a SR with various types of...
